Video Surveillance System is used for the purpose of monitoring the peoples to note their behavior and activities usually for managing or protecting them mostly from threats. Video Surveillance includes observation of peoples from a remote distance with the use of electronic equipments such as CCTV cameras, traffic cameras, interception of Internet traffic, and interception of video calls.

 Video Surveillance cameras are used for the purpose of observing an area so that we can take note of activity of that area. The tools used in video surveillance system used to be relatively expensive and every time it requires a human interaction to monitor camera footage but by the advancement of technology and by the use of automated software it becomes simple. American government spending billions of dollars per year in Homeland Security to install advanced video surveillance equipments to observe peoples, places or things so that the data can be used by security agencies to investigate criminal activities or to find suspicious activities.  

Chinese government is working closely with several US companies such as Honeywell, IBM and General Electric to install millions of surveillance cameras throughout china along with the some advanced technologies such as facial recognition system and video analytics software which will help Chinese government to identify and track individuals everywhere and wherever they go. 

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is funding a research project related to video surveillance called Combat Zones. This Project consists of linking up cameras across a city to a centralized monitoring station so that security agencies can use that data to identify and track peoples and vehicles and report any suspicious activity. 

Many times governments claim that cameras are meant to be used for traffic control but most of the time they end up doing general surveillance.
